I’m Charis Krevalin, class of 2022 and as a senior we get the opportunity to do community service. We call it a capstone. My capstone is posting stats for SMSA athletics on Instagram. This capstone is important to me because I am an athlete myself, and rather than just being involved with my sports and my team's record, I get the opportunity to know who was a leading scorer in basketball or football, or who had the most outs in baseball and share it with the SMSA community. I get to be more involved with the other sports that I am not a part of. I get to help my peers be recognized for how hard they work representing our school in athletics. I've recently added to my capstone. The middle school had a tragic incident in January, and their athletics doesn't get enough recognition. To help bring the kids some joy and recognition for the middle school I've decided to create an athletics page for the middle school. I feel with our school a lot of the attention is in the highschool. I want to help fix that and bring more recognition to the middle school students. My goal is to post every night to get every team recognized in our school for their hard work, Track, Softball, Basketball etc.
I want to do more research on the impact of fans in sports. Over this year we started out with allowing fans at games, but that was put on hold for a few weeks and no fans were allowed for some time. Recently fans are now allowed back into games, and as an athlete the difference between having fans and not having fans had a big impact on me, I want to see if it has a big impact on other athletes from the SMSA community to the whole world. I'm very interested in how fans affect athletes from middle school to the pros.
I asked Mr. Svoboda to be my mentor. He is our school's athletic director, this helps me because as the AD he can help me get the stats. He accepted, as my mentor he’s helping me with getting the game stats from the coaches from the boy basketball, track, middle school basketball and middle school track. To reach him I email him at [email protected] I predict my learning stretch is going to be getting the middle school page started. Until I get all the media releases I cannot start the page, I will be talking with the students about their releases and have them get them in as soon as possible so I can post them before the season ends. I think this project will push me to stay on top of my responsibilities, and push me to help students be recognized for their hard work on the court or field and I can't wait to move forward with the middle school page.
